"On the Appalachian Trail"

Each year, The Heritage Mural Education Program highlights a period of time, event or individuals as a subject for a large scale community mural. For Wind Gap’s first mural, (the program’s 7th!) students took a walk on the Appalachian Trail with local thru-hikers Chris Minnich and Jamie Ratchford as guides.

The design was created using first hand photos and research compiled about the plant and animal life of the region. Over 30 plants, birds and animals are represented from the noble oak to the delicate lady slipper. Students worked put in close to 500 hours over 10 weeks working on the design, rendering, scale drawings and painting on site. The mural received significant financial support from the Pennsylvania Partner in the Arts, "Project Stream”, Lehigh Valley Labor Union /United Way of the Lehigh Valley “Teen Works” and Thrivent Financial “Care Abounds in Communities” grants.

Our program also continues to ‘pay it forward’ by using sales of mural prints and postcards for additional funding.
